LOWER POTTSGROVE — Dozens upon dozens of people and classic cars showed up for East Coast Thunder 2009, held on the grounds of Sunnybrook Ballroom Saturday, bringing with them hundreds of donations to benefit the Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities.
Although the day started out a bit dreary, with cloudy weather and the threat of rain, those who stuck around had a lot of fun and did a lot of good for local people in need.
"I was riding that bike and doing donuts; it's pretty fun," said Paige Corra, 11, who was out with her family, including her 3-year-old cousin, Carter. She was taking a turn riding a unique tricycle, one of many kid-friendly activities at the event.
"We've just been playing games and having fun all day," Corra added.
While fun was definitely one of the draws to the event, for Thunder Outreach, the organizers of the event, the mission was to involve the community in giving something back to those in need.
"They've already taken a big pickup truck (full) and this is what's left," said volunteer Nancy Bainbridge, pointing to several big boxes of food that had been donated during Saturday's event. "Lots of families are going to be blessed by this."
Bainbridge said many of the spectators who came out to participate in the fun activ
ities, as well as get a close look at some of the dozens of classic cars on display, brought donations of canned goods and other food items. All the food will benefit local people and families in need as it would be dispersed by the Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities.
"As far as the goal ... it was just to bless the Pottstown area," Bainbridge continued. "I think we did that today.
"I had people come up to me, spectators come up to me and ask to give a monetary donation," she said, noting one person gave her $20.
Bainbridge said she herself has needed to accept help from others in the past, and so she made a promise to help others when she was in a position to do so. In this economy, Bainbridge admitted that "everybody does need help, but we need to help each other."
Giving to others in a selfless manner, "God is going to bless us," Bainbridge said.
Among the organizations present at East Coast Thunder 2009 was the National Guard.
"We were invited by Mark Malizzi," said Sgt. 1st Class David Weller. "We're based in Pottstown and we need to be a part of the community.
"Classic cars are always neat to look at and collecting food donations is a good thing," Weller added.
Brothers Bob and Dave Romig, both of Pottstown, came out for the cars. Bob Romig brought his Indian Motorcycle and Dave Romig brought his Pontiac GTO.
"We usually take our cars out somewhere every weekend," Bob Romig said. Each of the brothers, like every other person who brought a car or motorcycle out to the event for the classic or custom car show, paid a donation to participate. Those donations would also benefit the Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities.
Bob Aulenbach was out at the event with his 1957 Chevrolet "because of the event and what it stands for," he said. "More people should get involved. We're collecting food. This is for the needy. There's a lot of needy right now."
Lisa Malizzi, who along with her husband Mark founded Thunder Outreach, said the weather did affect the turnout organizers had hoped for, but those who did come out gave generously and made up for it.
"It was definitely a success, considering the weather," Malizzi said. "The donations were great."
Malizzi said the food collected will directly help people in the local community and all monetary donations will be used to buy food for those in need, especially around Thanksgiving.
