Light In the Night News Stories

  Put safety first this Halloween
By Jennifer Hetrick

This year, kids can celebrate Halloween in a number of neighborhoods without the danger of dimly lit streets because of Light in the Night Safe Zones spanning all across the area.

Mark Malizzi of the non-denominational faith-based ministry known as Thunder Outreach is helping people in the local community to be a part of a nationwide effort to let kids have fun while staying out of harm’s way this Halloween.

“We want to be where the children are walking,” Malizzi said.

This safe zone concept is being made possible by churches and families whose members have elected to host Light in the Night events complete with games, activities, and plenty of candy up for grabs in well-lit places.

Throughout this region of Pennsylvania, there are currently more than 40 Light the Night Safe Zone events planned for Halloween night, including three Boyertown sites—St. John’s Lutheran Church, Walnut Woods, and the home of Celeste Holzer at 27 Barb Lane.

Several churches and families in Pottstown and Birdsboro are also hosts for Light in the Night Safe Zones. A full listing of all locations is on the Web at www.thunderoutreach.com.

Safe Zones can be simply in front of a person’s house, outside of a church, or in a community park. Fire trucks with brightly flashing lights will be at certain locations.

U.S. Senator Robert Casey, U.S. Congressperson Jim Gerlach, and State Senators Stewart Greenleaf and John Rafferty offered letters of endorsement to Thunder Outreach for promoting the idea of such a positive and secure atmosphere for children this Halloween.

“More than anything, it shows a presence,” Malizzi said.
